"Deciding to attend Motherwell College on the Legal Services course 4 years ago was one of the best decisions I have ever made. I attended part-time at first and obtained my HNC but loved it so much I decided to attend full-time for my HND. Since completing my HND I have gone on to university to obtain a BA in Law. This course is a must for anyone interested in the legal profession - the lecturers are excellent and you even get to visit the courts to see the law in action. If I can do this course with five young children and a business to run, anyone can!"

Motherwell College's Business Department will ensure you gain the skills and qualifications relevant to today's job market. The Department has established an employers forum, forging links with local companies and government agencies, to gain their input into the curriculum to ensure that we only teach the subjects relevant to the workplace, improving your employment prospects.

January 2009 courses available now

This innovative Department has introduced lots of measures to ensure that the curriculum is interesting, relevant and inspiring for learners. In 2008, the College launched a Credit Union for Motherwell College students and staff, administered by our very own students from the HNC Accounting course. This is a first for a Scottish College and the venture is already proving to be a great success.

We also offer a variety of PDAs (Professional Development Awards) to professionals who wish to extend or broaden their skills base and currently provide courses in Book-keeping, Financial Accounting and Management Accounting, as well as the PDA in Administration and PDA in Office Technologies.

HN Students have the opportunity to visit the European Parliament in Strasbourg. Travel students also have the opportunity to take part in an overseas trip to analyse a major tourist setting in Spain, France or Italy.

Finally when it comes to academic achievements the Business Department has a great deal to be proud of. Students from the Department have won the SQA Student of the Year Award 2 years running now! The award was won by Laura Townsley at the College Awards Ceremony in November 2007. Laura impressed the judges with her determination to succeed despite facing a number of challenges in her personal life. The former HND Legal Services student is now studying for a BA (Hons) in Legal Studies at Glasgow Caledonian University. Laura said, "Gaining my HND was a great personal achievement as I was raising my family at the same time. The help of my tutors and the level of education I received at Motherwell College was outstanding - they really have prepared me for university."
