Offender Learning
Motherwell College is the major provider of further and higher education in Lanarkshire and is committed to widening access and inclusion for students of all abilities. In addition to it's role as a local further education provider the college has extensive experience in the field of offender learning.
Motherwell College is the main provider of offender learning, skills and employability services in Scotland, providing a service in 9 of 13 public sector prisons. The college has been involved in the delivery of learning services to prisons since 1985 and has experience of delivering to all categories of prisoner including:
- Remand
- Short-term
- Long-term
- Young People
- Males
- Females
Our Learning Service employs almost 100 staff who work across the whole country from Peterhead in the north to Dumfires in the south. Many staff have in excess of 10 years experience of working in prisons.
The prisons in which Motherwell College provides a learning service include:
- HMP Aberdeen
- HMP Barlinnie
- HMP Dumfries
- HMP Greenock
- HMP Inverness
- HMP Open Estate (2 sites)
- HMP Peterhead
- HM YOI Polmont
- HMP Shotts
In the past it has also delivered a service in HMP Dungavel (1985-2000), HMP Penninghame (1995-2000) and HMP Cornton Vale (2000-2005).
The College is at the forefront of the policy debate on prisoner education and on wider criminal justice isues and it is a corporate member of the European Prison Education Association (EPEA). Read more about EPEA
