If you are hoping to build a career in construction, electrical installation, engineering technology, security systems or fabrication and welding, our thriving Engineering Department offers a great range of courses. The Department, which is long-established, offers modern facilities and all courses reflect current trends in industry. You will undertake a great deal of practical work which greatly helps to prepare you for employment.
January 2009 courses available now
In session 2006/07 the Engineering Department introduced two Engineering Access programs in collaboration with Glasgow Caledonian and Strathclyde Universities, supported by SWAPWest. These courses are designed to provide opportunities to people who are keen to pursue a career in Engineering or Prosthetics but who have not yet obtained the qualification requirements for entry to university. Successful completion of either of the Access programs will guarantee access to Higher Education within the chosen field or equivalent.
We have increased the intake of apprentices in Manufacturing Engineering and Fabrication-Welding due to the uptake of the Modern Apprentice scheme by industry. This scheme allows companies to employ apprentices who receive on-the-job competence based training as well as technical underpinning knowledge at college on day-release. At the end of the 3 years' training, apprentices gain a SVQ at Level 3 as well as a NC certificate in their discipline. Apprentices who successfully complete the NC certificate can progress to the HNC with the approval of their employer.
