Choosing the Right Course
Subject
It’s important to have a passion for your subject, so think carefully about what will interest and motivate you.
Study mode
Think about the length of time you want to study and whether you want to attend College full-time or part-time. Most courses at Motherwell College last for either 1 or 2 years full-time - but part-time and distance learning opportunities are also available.
Assessment
Our courses are assessed in a variety of ways – from essays to examinations and exhibitions. Do you work best under pressure in an end-of-year exam, or would you prefer to be continuously assessed throughout the year? It’s likely your chosen course will have a mix of both of these forms of assessment.
Entry requirements
Different courses have different entry requirements, so it’s best to check these in advance to make sure you meet the right criteria. If you don’t have the qualifications needed to enter at the higher level, there are still options available to you.
At Motherwell College we offer courses starting at Access level in some subjects and National Qualification level in others which allow you to progress on to the higher level within a year or two. You may also be asked to come to a meeting with the course lecturer/head of department as part of the process.
Future plans
If you’ve got an idea of the kind of work you want to do in the future, find out if you’ll need a certain qualification to get into that particular career. For advice, read about our Employment Centre where staff can help you with career information.
