Motherwell College's Hospitality Department is renowned for its innovative approaches to teaching and learning. And 2007 was no different with many new initiatives being introduced to ensure students gain an even more rewarding experience.
In 2007 Motherwell College's first ever degree students graduated. This was a particularly proud event for the department as these were degrees in Hospitality Management, awarded in partnership with the Robert Gordon University.
The Hospitality Department enjoys excellent relationships with many local secondary schools. In 2006 the College, in partnership with Cardinal Newman High School, opened Scotland's first ever Junior Hospitality Academy. This unique partnership has already been highly successful. In 2007, the Junior Hospitality Academy scooped 2 national awards - the Scottish College Restaurant of the Year and the CIS Excellence Award for 'Innovation in Training'. The Hospitality Department also won a National Training Award in 2007 in recognition of its partnership with Macdonald Hotels and was a finalist at the 2007 Food Manufacture Excellence Awards in association with Grampian Foods of Cambuslang. Motherwell College's award winning Hospitality Department continues to attract students from throughout the UK and overseas. In recognition of the Department's international profile, the British Council has secured the services of Motherwell College's hospitality team in helping overseas institutions establish successful systems of industrial training.
The Department is a key partner in Scotland's first Centre for Applied Tourism & Hospitality Management. CATHM, as it is commonly known, is modelled on the idea of a Swiss Hotel School. This work-based learning centre opened in 2007 and is based at the Macdonald Highland Resort, Aviemore. Motherwell College's first class of 'Aviemore trained' Hospitality Management students are scheduled to complete their HNCs and HNDs in 2007/2008.
The Hospitality Department will continue looking for new ways to make teaching and learning even more exciting for students. Staff are currently working closely with Hilton Hotels and Macdonald Hotels in running modern apprenticeships for both organisations, thereby giving students the opportunity to work and learn with the best in the industry.
