Motherwell College Students Knitting Together for Lanarkshire Hospitals
Learning to knit isn’t something many young Scots do these days.
So there was a bit of ‘needle’ to begin with….some were left in stitches…and some were literally tied up in knots.
But students at Motherwell College Care Department got there in the end. And it is all for a good cause...
Working towards the ‘Preparation for Child Care’ course, they have been knitting booties, blankets and hats which are being donated to Lanarkshire hospitals.
Many of the eighteen students in the class had never knitted before – but thanks to lecturers at Motherwell College - they are now producing pristine items for Wishaw General Hospital’s special baby care unit and for Strathclyde Hospital.
The students’ handiwork is now part, purl and parcel of a citizenship project in their coursework – after insisting that knitting items for local hospitals was a great idea.
On checking out that the hospitals would take the finished articles, they ‘cast on.’
Lecturer Shona Shaw, who had to pick up many a dropped stitch at the start, said: "The class has really ‘knitted’ together on this project. We did have to do a bit of unravelling though because knitting is not something commonly taught at home any more. We are all very proud of the efforts of everyone involved."
Motherwell College moved to a new campus at Ravenscraig in July 2009. More than 20,000 students and 500+ staff continue to take advantage of the high quality education programmes the College offers in the new 21st century £70 million facilities.
