January 2009 courses available now
Motherwell College's Performing Arts Section is one of Scotland's most experienced and renowned training providers.
As well as providing the extremely popular Musical Theatre and Performing Arts courses, the College also provides Scotland's first course in Rock and Pop.
The course attracted the backing of Wet Wet Wet's former guitarist, producer and sound engineer who now run The Foundry Music Lab, where some of the course is delivered. The course has proved so popular that it is now offered at NQ, HNC and HND levels.
The Performing Arts Section, along with the rest of the Creative Arts, Media and Design Department is continually looking for new ways to enhance learning and teaching. In 2006 the College became Europe's first Educational Affiliate of the Estill Voice Training System. The College has heavily invested in staff training in this area, and this sets the College apart as a training provider in this field.
In 2007 students from the Department delivered the North Lanarkshire Council professional touring pantomime, while earlier in the year students also performed in The Witches of Eastwick in the Motherwell Theatre as part of the section's mission to provide realistic assessment experiences. In the summer of 2007 Rock and Pop students had the opportunity to perform at a live outdoor concert, Rock in the Park, at M&D's Theme Park. Working in partnership with South Lanarkshire Council also allows dance students to utilise the professional dance studios in the newly refurbished Hamilton Town House. Students joining the college in 2008 will have the opportunity to gain similar experiences. These partnerships with both North and South Lanarkshire Councils allow the College to utilise professional venues and allows the local authorities to draw on a wealth of talent for special events and productions which together enhance the overall student experience.
