Motherwell College awards ceremony

A Night to Remember

Over 200 students received awards at the 2007 Student Awards Ceremony. The glittering event was held at the Motherwell Civic Centre in November with an audience of over 900 packing into the venue.

The event was symbolic as the College's first degree students were awarded. Presenting the awards and delivering a keynote speech was Professor Mike Pittilo Principal and Vice-Chancellor of The Robert Gordon University.

Each college department awarded its Higher Education and Further Education Student of the Year winners.

Higher Education Student of the Year Winners - Leonard Gingell (Department of Automotive Studies); Laura Townsley (Department of Business); Andrew MacKie (Department of Care); Carol Whitfield (Department of Computing and IT); Maggie McLeod (Department of Creative Arts, Media & Design); Cameron Buchanan (Department of Engineering); Patricia O'Hare (Department of Food and Beauty) and Michael Burns (Department of Hospitality and Sport).

Further Education Student of the Year Winners - Richard Kelly (Department of Automotive Studies); Morag McNeill (Department of Business); Kelly-Anne Brown (Department of Care); Noreen Cook (Department of Computing and IT); David Jenkins (Department of Creative Arts, Media & Design); Daniel Hassan (Department of Engineering); Debbie Glachan (Department of Food and Beauty) and Jordan McAleney (Department of Hospitality and Sport).

Debbie Glachan (Department of Food and Beauty) was declared the overall Further Education Student of the Year due to the progress she has made since attending Motherwell College. Head of Department, David Aikman described Debbie as, "A positive role model not only for members of her own class but within the department as a whole""

The overall SQA Student of the Year from the eight HE winners was announced as Laura Townsley (Department of Business) as she was judged to have overcome many difficulties and shown that determination can help anyone get through even the most difficult of circumstances.

For the first time the College awarded a Degree Student of the Year, the accolade going to Christine Forbes.
