A Qualifications Guide
This qualifications guide is designed to help you find the level of study that is right for you. The Scottish Qualifications Authority and other professional bodies approve our courses. This guide aims to help you understand what these qualifications actually mean. For more information contact our Customer Services team on 01698 232425.
Higher National Diploma (HND)
HND is one of the highest qualifications awarded by the Scottish Qualifications Authority. Available in a range of subjects, you can gain a HND by completing 30 credits. With a HND you can progress to year 2 or 3 of a relevant degree course. It normally takes 2 years to complete a HND on a full-time basis or longer if you study part-time.
Higher National Certificate (HNC)
You can gain a HNC in a wide range of subjects by completing 12 credits. It normally takes 1 year to complete a HNC on a full-time basis or longer if you study part-time. With a HNC you can progress to year 2 of a relevant HND or year 1 or 2 of a relevant degree course.
National Qualifications (NQ)
NQs enable you to progress beyond Standard Grade level and are available at access, intermediate, higher and advanced levels.
Scottish Vocational Qualifications (SVQ)
You can study for SVQs in your place of work or in College allowing you to learn new skills that are related to your job.
Professional Development Award (PDA)
PDA courses are available at various levels and are designed to enhance your skills and provide you with a qualification related to a specific job.
The Scottish Credit and Qualifications Framework
Once you have gained one qualification, it is possible that you will not need to spend time repeating that learning when you are studying for another related qualification. As you progress, you may be able to move from one area of learning to another, such as progressing from a NQ in Childcare/Early Years to a HNC in Early Years Education and Childcare, or from a HND in Engineering to year 3 of a University degree in Engineering. For more information on The Scottish Credit and Qualifications Framework visit www.scqf.org.uk For more information on courses at Motherwell College call 01698 232425, email information@motherwell.co.uk or search this website.

Aiming for University
Every year, Motherwell College helps many students gain qualifications which enable them to progress to university courses. After you complete a HNC or HND you can normally access year 2 or 3 of a degree course at a university. The College has also established formal arrangements, called articulation agreements, with partner universities so you can easily progress from our HN courses to a university degree course.
You will find that there are a number of benefits to be gained by choosing to study at College before progressing to University, including small class sizes and a high level of student support.
If you want advice on your options please contact our Customer Services team on 01698 232425. A booklet containing details of Motherwell College's current articulation links with Universities throughout the UK is also available upon request.
