College Relocation to Ravenscraig Site

A Momentous Ceremony

Future students can look forward to Motherwell College's relocation to a new campus located at the former Ravenscraig site. This will replace the existing campus located at Dalzell Drive in Motherwell which opened 40 years ago.

The first students to grace the halls of the new build will commence their studies in August 2009. The campus development includes a five-storey teaching block, a two-storey workshop block, a seven-storey residential block, a single-storey children's nursery building, a single-storey outbuilding, a polytunnel, parking and landscaping. The main teaching block will have a large amount of glazing and a large proportion of the southern elevation will be contained behind a glazed curtain. Behind the glazed curtain there will be an atrium, which creates an internal streetscape in the college building. The development will include conference facilities, a public learning centre, a training restaurant and bar, performing arts space and a job shop. There will be a plaza at the centre of the campus to provide social space for sitting and meeting, with a pedestrian link through the plaza to allow connection to the buildings.

Principal Hugh Logan is, naturally, enthusiastic about the new campus development. He said: "Ravenscraig is embedded in Lanarkshire's history and it is really exciting that we will be the first organisation to open on the new site. We are already the largest provider of post-school education in Lanarkshire and our move to Ravenscraig will enable us to provide an even better learning environment for the whole community to take advantage of. The opening of the new college in August 2009 will be a momentous occasion for not only Motherwell College but the entire community as life is reborn at the Ravenscraig site."

A momentous ceremony took place on Friday 30 November as the first sod was cut at the site of the new College campus. The campus is the first major development at Ravenscraig, once the home of steelmaking in Lanarkshire.

Looking forward to the future of Motherwell College is Chairman Ian Watson:

"After a huge amount of planning, cutting the turf was highly symbolic as we officially recognised the beginning of the new college campus. Motherwell College is at the heart of the community and we are part of the regeneration of that community. The new College at Ravenscraig will have the most modern of facilities and equipment and will provide the best quality of education in Lanarkshire."

John McClelland CBE, Chair of the Scottish Further and Higher Education Funding Council (SFC), cut the first sod alongside two current Motherwell College students (Hannah Garner and Alan Wylie - HNC Acting & Performance). He said: "Our funding is helping Motherwell College to build a first-class, environmentally sustainable building with the best facilities and equipment available to them, as well as contributing to the regeneration of Ravenscraig.

"The local and wider community will benefit from a modern and stimulating learning environment for years to come."
