Scottish Wider Access Programme (SWAPWEST) - Access Courses at Motherwell College

Are you interested in going to University to advance your career, but don't have the qualifications you need? If so, Motherwell College can help!

Motherwell College run SWAP Access Courses to meet the needs of a number of individual career choices. These courses are helpful if you have left school with few or no qualifications and want to return to education. Alternatively, an Access course is an ideal starting point if you want to change career and your qualifications are not relevant or out-of-date.

Students who have successfully completed the SWAPWest programme have gone on to study a range of degree programmes at University or at HNC/D levels. Successful completion of a SWAPWest programme guarantees a place in Higher education.

The Access Courses prepare you for entry to university. This includes visits to universities as well as preparation for study at degree level.

Ongoing guidance and assistance is an integral part of the Access Courses to facilitate successful completion and correct career choice.

SWAP Access Course to Prosthetics & Sports Engineering

This is a 1 year full-time course that covers a number of Intermediate 2 & Higher subjects such as:

  • Information Technology
  • Communications
  • Mathematics
  • Biology
  • Physics
  • English
  • Sports Performance (Physiology, Functional Anatomy & Movement)

Future Options:

  • BSc (Hons) Degree in Prosthetics & Orthotics
  • BEng in Sports Engineering

{Both at Strathclyde University*}

If only some qualifications are required you can study relevant subjects only.

* A number of other progression routes are available at University of Glasgow, University of Strathclyde, Glasgow Caledonian University and University of the West of Scotland.

SWAP Access Course to Engineering

This is a 1-year full-time course that covers a number of Intermediate 2 & Higher subjects such as:

  • Information Technology
  • Communications
  • Mathematics
  • English
  • Electrical Engineering
  • Electronic Engineering
  • Mechanical Engineering

Future Options:

On successful completion of this course you can progress to:

  • BEng in Engineering
  • BSc in Engineering

{Both at a number of universities}

If only some qualifications are required, you can study relevant subjects only.

Access to Humanities Full-time Course (Part-time Study Also Available)

The course is designed to introduce you to Human and Social Studies. Teaching methods vary, but include use of handouts, group work, discussion, video and audio presentation as well as lecturer input. You complete 20 units at Intermediate 2 and Higher levels including:

  • Psychology
  • Sociology
  • Geography
  • History
  • Politics
  • Philosophy
  • Information Technology
  • Communications
  • Numeracy
  • Contemporary issues
  • Preparation for Higher Education (HE)

You are in class/structured study for approximately 21 hours each week.

Future Options:
On successful completion of this course you can progress to:

  • Higher National Courses (HNC/HND) in Social Sciences
  • Year 1 of a degree programme in Humanities, Social Sciences, Applied Social Sciences or Behavioural Sciences

Many areas of work accept the relevance of social sciences, including administration, local government, banking, police, civil service, education, caring services and retailing to name a few.
